Men charged for Drugs

A drug case which commenced in April 2007, was finally settled in court on Thursday the 20th of November 2008.

The case involved five young men whose vessel was intercepted by officers from the Marine Unit, about a quarter nautical mile off the coast of Rodney Bay, quarter of Gros Islet.

A search of the vessel revealed a quantity of seventy three (73) kilos of compressed marijuana.  The men were arrested and subsequently charged by officers of the Drug Unit for the Possession of Controlled Drugs. They are:

Nelvin President, age 28 years of Ciceron, Edmund George age 44 of Ciceron, Indy Regis, age 32 of Marchand Road, Castries, Anthony Benoir, age 42 of Marchand, Castries and Elber Francis, age 30 of Monier, quarter of Gros Islet.

When the matter was finally heard, two of the men, Nelwin President and Edmund George changed their plea and pleaded guilty to the charges.  Consequently, the matter was withdrawn against the other men.

George and President were ordered to pay a fine of $75,000EC each.  The sum of $20,000EC to be paid forthwith or two years imprisonment and the balance of $55,000EC to be paid by the 31st of March 2009, or in default three years imprisonment to run consecutively.
