Opening of the New Micoud Police Sation

The new Micoud Police Station was opened on Wednesday the 15th of November 2006. In attendance was the Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Senator Calixte George, Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ausbert Regis, Parish Priest, Fr. Ed Mesias, Gazetted officers of the Royal St. Lucia Police Force and community members.

The Commissioner in his remarks indicated that he feels very proud to be the first Commissioner to witness the opening of so many police stations. He hopes that the officers employed at the station will take care of it, after having worked for so long in deplorable conditions. He ended by saying that he hopes to see a modern Police Headquarters in the near future.

Minister George in his address stated that some people think that the government is wasting money building new police stations. He went on to say that his government saw the need to build new police stations due to the fact that for decades police officers have worked in deplorable conditions, until the Labour government came into office. He stressed on the point that if you allow people to work in a pig sty, they will behave like pigs.

He formally welcomed the U.K. officers, for being here with us, and indicated that they are highly professional and qualified enough, to assist the police force. He further stated that they are here to mentor and the supervisors should learn as much as they can from them.

He spoke about an integration of the Special Services Unit (SSU) and the regular police officers. He wants the SSU officers on foot patrol along with the regular officer on every street corner to contribute to a decrease in criminal activity.

The minister ended by thanking Charles and Jules Construction Limited and NIPRO for a job well done.
