Mission

» To interdict the movement of Illicit Drugs and Contraband. 

» Providing assistance to vessels in distress.

» Protection of the Marine Environment.

» Performing RSS Duties and assist in the Enforcement of the Fisheries Act, Port Authority and Customs Laws as it relates to Maritime Environment. 

 

  RESPONSIBILITIES
1. To maintain an Operational capability to respond to both local and Regional requests in the event of man made and natural disasters or any other situation that threatens stability in any of the Caribbean states.

 2. To carry out operations to counter:

• Illegal Immigration
• Smuggling
• Subversive Operations
• Counter narcotics
• Enforcement of the Fisheries regulations
• Laws of the State
• Police the territorial waters of St. Lucia
• Search & Rescue
• Customs Laws
• Any other activity which may be assigned to us from time to time by the Commissioner of Police
•Anti-pollution surveillance and response.
3. Law Enforcement:
• Maintaining Law and Order extending 12 nautical miles from the shore, in territorial waters and fisheries Exclusive Economic Zone(EEZ) extending 200 nautical miles.
4. Search & Rescue Operations: • The Marine Unit has a search and rescue capability, which operates in conjunction with the local area Maritime Response Co-ordination Center (MRCC) in Fort-de-France, Martinique and the U.S. Coastguard Greater Antilles Section (GANTSEC) – RCC in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
5. Safety Inspections:
• The Port Authority carries out Safety inspections with assistance from the Marine Unit when requested.  At present one member of the Unit has undergone specialist training in that field.
• All vessels plying for hire within the St. Lucian waters must have the necessary safety equipment as stated in the Port Authority Regulations
