The Royal St Lucia Police Force has recently forged a new and exciting partnership with the UK-based, high-tech security company called Plenary Security Ltd. |

In my recent interview with The Managing Director, Mr Lloyd Shepherd, he explained that he is working with Superintendent Paul Hayden Lionel, who is in charge of IT within the RSPLF.
He further stated that, “one police vehicle has been installed with a Digital Video Recorder, (DVR) and the police can now drive through an area where criminal activity is in progress and video the scene.” He went on to say that the installation of this equipment, (the DVR) is an unquestionably effective method of enabling police officers to better detect and monitor criminal activity.
It is intended that the DVR unit be installed in all police vehicles which would incorporate a screen enabling police officers to view and record activities/events of a suspicious nature.
The first device of its kind has already been installed in a police vehicle attached to the Gros Islet Police Station.
What does this mean in real terms? Mr Shepherd explained that this will go a long way in assisting police officers in the identification of suspects and also to determine the veracity of the divergence of accounts given by persons involved in a crime.
The next stage of the development is to issue certain police officers with small DVR units that would be on their person so as to facilitate video recordings during the interview process. Needless to say, the interviewing police officer would disclose the fact that the interview is being recorded.
There are further plans for the installation of other sophisticated equipment to be put in place near the road-side which would record the registration number of any vehicle that exceed the speed limit.
A locally-based company with highly trained staff will be responsible for the maintenance of this high tech equipment.
Finally, the RSLPF has embraced this initiative which involves the installation of modern technology on police vehicles.
