“SPOILER” IS POLICE CALYPSO MONARCH

Despite the poor weather conditions, calypso lovers flocked the canteen yard at Police Headquarters on Friday night, 30th June 2006, for the Police Calypso Competition.

Eleven Calypsonians participated in the event but in the final analysis, it was Constable Alden Joseph Raphael, stage name, “Spoiler,” who emerged victorious and walked away with the crown. He represented the Special Patrol Group of the Force.

Spoiler’s song, “We back to De Wall” which was written and arranged by Sergeant Curtis Sealy of the Police Band, was well received by the audience who sang along with him and visibly expressed their satisfaction. The song basically highlighted the problems encountered by Police Officers who are still expected to perform at a high standard under the circumstances. The crowd’s

favorite lines “We cyah get increase, but they bringing seven British Police.” and “No shoes on my feet, but they want me to go and walk de beat,” seemed to have been etched on the memories of the audience who continued singing even long afterwards.

An exuberant Spoiler enthused about his performance on the night and stated that he had much to say about his writer who he said rendered tremendous support and provided the necessary guidance. Spoiler is expected to represent the police at the Inter Commercial House Calypso event, scheduled for Thursday the 13th of July, 2006.

Two other calypsonians, Roy Busby, “Killer Bee” and Dennie Marshall “De Marshall”, placed first and second runners-up respectively, with “Killer Bee” doing, “Its not so” and Marshall with, “Let the Music play.”

There were also guest appearances by a Dominican Police Calypsonian, Deryck St. Rose, known as “The Hunter” and Callix Xavier, popularly known as Kakal, who both gave very good accounts of themselves. Kakal sent the crowd in a frenzy with his new creole release, “Antonyah, how much is your cutcake, your ice-lolly and your food.”

Members of the public expressed great satisfaction with the performances of the various participants who they say displayed great talent through their stage presentation and vocal ability.

Music was provided by members of the Royal St. Lucia Police Band.
